Validate if a given string is a valid email format. A valid email must have characters before the @ symbol, the @ symbol itself, a domain name after @, a dot (.), and a domain extension after the dot. Return true if the email is valid, false otherwise. Handle null and empty strings by returning false.
Examples:
Input: email = 'user@example.com'
Output: true
Explanation: Valid email format with all required components
Input: email = 'invalid.email'
Output: false
Explanation: Missing @ symbol, not a valid email
Input: email = null
Output: false
Explanation: Null input should return false
