Create a method that counts the number of words in a string. Words are separated by spaces, and the method should handle empty strings and null values appropriately.
The method should:
- Return 0 for null or empty inputs
- Handle strings with only spaces
- Count words separated by one or more spaces
- Trim leading and trailing spaces
